The Cars' sleek, mechanical pop rock brought them platinum status success, separating them from their arty New York peers. Before the Cars, members Benjamin Orr and Ric Ocasek played in a somewhat forgettable folk rock band called Milkwood. Beanpole like lead singer guitarist Ric Ocasek married "Sports Illustrated" cover model Paulina Porizkova in 1989. Bass player singer Benjamin Orr died of cancer in October 2000. He was only 53. "The New Cars" reconvened in 2006 minus Ocasek, who gave his blessing to original members Eliot Easton and Greg Hawkes.
