The Band captured and released the ghosts of Okie souls in their unpretentious, down home roots music. The Band wrote and recorded songs that would influence anyone in love with Americana. Though the Band's music has been described as songs of "weird old America," most of their members are actually from Canada. Eric Clapton asked to join The Band after he heard <i>Music From Big Pink< i>, but was denied. In 1998 Mercury Rev put out an indie album named "Deserter's Songs" and got the Band's Garth Hudson and Levon Helm to cameo.
