These sundazed pioneers of West Coast country placed the emphasis on the "country" in their country rock. Formed in 1965, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band have been together for over 40 years longer than any other country band. Founding members Jeff Hanna and Bruce Kunkel were in the folky duo New Coast Two before forming the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Los Angeles' own helmet haircut donning singer songwriter Jackson Browne was a founding member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band recorded with country legends Roy Acuff, Earl Scruggs, Mother Maybelle Carter and others in 1972.
