Jake Owen sings radio twang with hints of honky tonk grit. He claims Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings as his influences. Owen was pining for a pro golfing career until a waterskiing accident ended his plans. Crestfallen, he turned to the twang. Before writing his own songs, Jake Owen lent his buttery baritone to country music covers that he sang on campus for beer. Owen owed only nine credit hours to get an English and political science degree. But he dropped out and split for Nashville. Owen landed his first album deal at the age of 24 after living in Nashville for a while and honing his craft.
