In the ' 70s and ' 80s, Dire Straits produced slick, softly boogie ing pop rock that appealed to critics and the masses alike. Mark Knopfler was the Yorkshire "Evening Post"'s rock critic while in college before becoming a rock star. Dire Straits broke through on the BBC with one of their first demos, "Sultans of Swing." For 10 years the band produced massive hits, powered in large part by their inventive music videos. The band's caustic anti MTV song, "Money For Nothing," became a huge hit...on MTV.
